Custom metadata are additional properties with values that users can add to keys to provide more context and details. Such properties can be carried over upon importing and exporting keys.

Supported types of custom metadata are:

  • Text (up to 65,535 characters)

  • Short string (up to 255 characters)

  • Number

  • Multi-select

  • Single-select

  • Date

  • Links

  • Boolean

Existing custom metadata properties are accessible to all users in the Custom metadata page.

When assigned to a project, custom metadata properties will be visible for each key in the Strings editor. The Custom metadata section of the contextual sidebar allows to add or edit values of the available properties.

Note

Custom metadata are not supported in branched projects.

Custom Metadata Page

The Custom metadata page is accessible by selecting Custom metadata from the left-side navigation panel.

Custom metadata properties are presented in a table with relevant information. Click on the desired property to open the Custom property window and display more details about it.

Search and Filter Custom Metadata

Use the search field at the top of the page to filter the list of custom metadata by name.

To display only properties assigned to specific projects, click on the All projects dropdown menu and select one or multiple projects to filter the list.

To display only certain types of properties, click on the All types dropdown menu and select one or multiple types to filter the list.

The searching and filtering options in the Custom metadata page can be combined to refine search results.

Users can also search for custom metadata properties through the Advanced search in the Strings editor and global search.

Add Custom Metadata

Custom metadata can only be added by:

  • Owners

  • Admins

  • Project managers (on assigned or own projects)

To add a new custom metadata property, follow these steps:

  1. Select + New property at the top right of the Custom metadata page.

    The Create new property window is displayed.

  2. Provide required information in the relevant fields:

    • Property name must be unique.

    • Select the property type from the Type dropdown.

      • For Single select and Multi select property types, specify values in the Values field and press Enter.

    • Description is optional.

    • Select one or multiple projects to assign the new property to from the Assigned projects dropdown.

  3. Click Save.

    The newly created property is added to the list of custom metadata.

Edit and Delete Custom Metadata

Custom metadata can only be edited and removed by:

  • Owners

  • Admins

  • Project managers (on assigned or own projects)

Once created, custom metadata properties can be edited by selecting Edit from the More options more.jpeg menu.

To change only assigned projects:

  1. Select one or multiple custom metadata from the list, then click Edit assigned projects at the top of the page.

    A dropdown window with available projects is displayed. Previously assigned projects are pre-selected.

  2. Search for and select the desired projects in the dropdown, then click Apply Changes.

  3. Click Save in the confirmation message.

    The existing project assignment is overridden and information about assigned projects is updated in the list.

Note

When a custom metadata property is no longer assigned to a project, the property's values are remembered. If the same custom metadata is reassigned to the project, any existing values will be visible again in the Strings editor.

To delete custom metadata, select one or more properties from the list and click Delete at the top of the page. Once confirmed, deletion of custom metadata is irreversible.

Import and Export Custom Metadata

Import values

Custom metadata values can be added to keys upon file upload in the project page.

Supported file formats are:

When importing a new file, the file preview allows to specify which custom metadata is associated with certain key values, according to available properties assigned to the project.

Select the custom metadata property from the Custom metadata section in the file preview to import a key value as custom metadata value.

Note

If column names in the .XLSX or .CSV file match custom metadata property names, the corresponding custom metadata are automatically selected in the file preview.

Export values

Custom metadata values can be exported with the keys upon file download in the project page.

Supported file formats are:

When exporting one or more language files, select the desired custom metadata values using the Custom metadata fields option in the General tab.

To filter exported keys by specific custom metadata values:

  1. In the Download window, select the Filter translations tab and click Add filter .

  2. Select a custom metadata from the dropdown field and specify the relevant value.

  3. Repeat the above steps to add more custom metadata.

  4. Click Download to export the keys with the applied filters.
