To speed up formatting within a segment, I do want to be forced to select whole words before changing their formatting. It should work like this:

• Place a cursor inside a word and select a formatting option from the menu bar or press the corresponding shortcut: the formatting of the whole word changes accordingly. 
• It should work for bold, italics, underlined, superscript, and subscript.
