Translating

Ordering Professional Translations (Strings)

When managing translations they can be provided internally or professional translations can be ordered from Phrase translation partners. Pricing for ordered translations is displayed before placing the order, translation progress is tracked and when complete, notifications are sent. Turnaround time is dependant on size of translation, commonality of languages and quality of provided contextual information. Most translations are provided within 24 hours.

Warning

Some LSP's do not support hosting user data and orders in US data centers. It is possible that data can leave the US when using Textmaster or other 3rd party translators.

Gengo will maintain data within the specified data center.

  • Only Administrators or Project managers have the permission to order translations.

  • The integration can not be used for source copy review (e.g. proofreading). Source language must be finalized before submission.

  • If including unverified strings when sending an order, the existing translation string in the target language is not transmitted in the process and the source string for the key is re-translated.

  • External translators do not access Phrase in the process and don't have access to translation resources stored in an organization. This includes term bases, translation memory and the In-context editor.

  • If strings contain technical content such as placeholders, HTML tags or ICU, ensure instructions on how to handle this content is provided in a briefing or style guide.

  • If branding and control over the translation process are important, use Advanced Textmaster integration.

Information available to translators

Add as much meta information to an order as possible. The more information provided, the better the quality of the translation and the sooner it is returned.

This information is provided to translators when an order is confirmed:

  • Description of the key.

  • Screenshot attached to the key.

  • Source translation for the key.

  • Content of the style guide you attached to an order.

  • Custom messaging entered during the order process.

  • Max. number of characters allowed (configurable in translation key settings).

Mark untranslatables

Text within a translation order may not require translation (such as code blocks or comments for the translator). To prevent text from being modified and indicate to the translator that it does not need to be translated, wrap text within no-translate tags [NOTRANSLATE]like this[/NOTRANSLATE].

Ensure no-translate tags are closed and avoid large areas of excluded text. Non-translate tags cannot be nested and must be written in all uppercase letters to be detected correctly.

No-translate tags are removed when downloaded.

Example:

String to be translated by professional translators:

Hello [NOTRANSLATE]username[/NOTRANSLATE]! Thanks for stopping by!

Received translation:

Hallo [NOTRANSLATE]username[/NOTRANSLATE]! Danke, dass du vorbeischaust!

Mark placeholders as untranslatable for translators

Translations may include placeholders to be translated in an order. To prevent placeholders from being modified and indicate to the translator that it does not need to be translated, choose the appropriate placeholder formats in project settings. This ensures that all recognized placeholders matching the selected format are automatically marked as untranslatable and placeholders validation can be provided in the delivered translations.

Phrase Partner LSP

Ordering translations with Phrase’s Partner LSPs means quality assurance whilst not compromising on efficiency and speed. Certified partners offer a broad variety of translations services and help with individual solutions. Long-term relationships are built providing localizations and translations with increasing quality and speed.

Upon selection of this option, a list of Phrase's Partner LSPs is sent for evaluation. Any other external LSP can only be added as a user to the organization in Strings.

Re-ordering

To re-order translations for keys, unverify all translations for the keys in the desired locale that should be included in the translation order. Select the include unverified translations option when creating the new order. Translations provided will be new translations of the source language string and existing, unverified translations will not be made available to translators in the process.

Related translations in the project will be replaced with the content of the ordered translations delivered by the translation service provider. To review changes between an old translation and the delivered translation, compare the different versions in the editor.
